Alun William Evans, born Kidderminster, England, April 30, 1949. While Alun Evans never quite lived up to early expectations, the amiable centre-forward still had a good playing career to look back on.
Alun Evans embarked on his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers for whom he recorded four goals during 22 Football League appearances before joining Bill Shankly´s Liverpool at the front end of the 1968-69 campaign for a transfer fee of £100,000, making him Britain’s most expensive teenage player at the time. After finding the back of the net on his First Division debut in a 4-0 home triumph against lowly placed Leicester City on the 21st of September, he scored a brace either side of the half-time break in a 6-0 demolition of none other than his former employers Wolverhampton at Molineux the following week and then hit another goal in a 2-0 victory at home to North West rivals Manchester United on the 12th of October. Settling nicely into new surroundings, he made the scoresheet again in a 2-1 success over Newcastle United at Anfield a fortnight later and would end up netting seven first-team goals in 33 outings in his first year with The Reds. Evans improved on that the next season by scoring nine goals in 25 first-class appearances, but unfortunately his progress was halted by persistent injuries and he eventually lost his place in the starting eleven to ex-Scunthorpe United player Kevin Keegan. Subsequently, he was transferred to recently promoted Second Division club Aston Villa for a fee of £72,000 at the beginning of the 1972-73 campaign and made his debut for The Villains in a 4-1 League Cup First Round win over Hereford United at Villa Park on the 16th of August, scoring one of the goals. After notching up 17 goals in 71 games in all competitions for Aston Villa, he was sold to Division Three Walsall for a modest fee of £30,000 in the middle of the 1975-76 season and would go on to amass 87 League outings for The Saddlers before signing with first South Melbourne and later Morwell Falcons and Sandringham City. On the international stage, Evans earned four caps for England´s Under-23 side following his debut in a 2-2 friendly draw with the Netherlands at Birmingham City´s St Andrew´s on the 13th of November 1968.
