Stephen Pears

Stephen Pears, born Brandon, England, January 22, 1962. Stephen Pears appeared for Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Liverpool and Hartlepool United in a career which lasted for 20 years.

Stephen Pears started out his playing days with Manchester United, but the shot stopper found it difficult to become a regular under ex-West Bromwich Albion manager Ron Atkinson and he was shipped out on loan to Malcolm AllisonĀ“s Middlesbrough during the 1983-84 season. He was eventually given a permanent contract with Boro, now managed by former Ayresome Park centre-back Willie Maddren, at the end of the 1984-85 campaign and went on to accumulate over 400 first-team appearances for The Teessiders before he joined Liverpool at the beginning of the 1995-96 season to provide cover for first-choice goalkeeper David James. After failing to play a single game for The Reds, he would ultimately move on to Football League Third Division Hartlepool United for whom he played 19 matches before finishing his football career in 1998 at the age of 35. Pears later worked as a goalkeeping coach for Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and National League club Gateshead.
