Henning Stille Berg, born Eidsvoll, Norway, September 1, 1969. Henning Berg played for VIF Oslo, Lillestrom SK, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester United, and Glasgow Rangers between 1998 and 2004. After a rewarding footballing career that saw him win three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one Football League Cup, and one UEFA Champions League trophy, Berg moved into management with Lyn Oslo at the end of the 2003-04 season.
Born in the historical municipality of Eidsvoll in Norway, Henning Berg kick-started his long and rewarding career with the Young Men’s Christian Association of Oslo. From there, the central defensive bulwark went on to appear for Norwegian Premier League teams VIF of Oslo and Lillestrom SK before he was bought by English Premier League side Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £400,000 midway through the 1992-93 campaign. He made his debut for The Riversiders as a second half substitute for Gordon Cowans in a 2–1 Premier League defeat against Crystal Palace at Ewood Park on the 2nd of February 1993 and quickly settled down in Lancashire. While with Blackburn, Berg emerged as one of the key players in the extremely talented Rovers team that went on to win the Premier League Championship in 1994-95. Greatly impressed by the defensive qualities of the Ewood Park central half, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson then brought him to Old Trafford for an estimated transfer fee of £5 million at the beginning of the 1997-98 season. Ironically, Berg had a trial with United in 1987, but he was unable to sign a contract with The Reds after he had failed to obtain a work permit. The Norseman combined a clinical tackle with good positional sense and was handed his first Premier League appearance for the club by Ferguson when he took the field as a substitute for fellow countryman Ronny Johnsen in a 1-0 triumph against Southampton at Old Trafford on the 13th of August 1997.
At Manchester United, Berg helped his employers clinch the coveted The Treble as the club went on to win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League in the 1998-1999 campaign. The Manchester United powerhouse won his third Premier League medal the following year before he decided to make his return to Blackburn Rovers where he helped his former club regain their Premier League status in 2001. In the season that followed, he picked up a League Cup medal with The Blue and Whites before he moved to Glasgow Rangers where he finished off his active career. A Norwegian international, he was handed his senior debut by long ball merchant Egil Olsen in a 2-0 friendly victory over the Faroe Islands at Ullevall Stadium in Oslo on the 13th of May 1992 and proceeded to play an astonishing 100 matches for the Norway team. The commanding central defender also represented his homeland in the 1994 World Cup in the United States of America and the 1998 World Cup in France, as well as the 2000 European Championship in Belgium and the Netherlands. After ulitmately hanging up his football equipment in the summer of 2004, Berg took over the head coaching helm at Norwegian Premier League side Lyn Oslo, where he stayed until was hired as manager of Lillestrom SK on the 21st of October 2008. He then managed Blackburn Rovers and Legia Warsaw before he signed a two-year contract with Videoton on the 5th of May 2016, only to be sacked the following year.
