Jeff Wealands

Jeffrey Andrew Wealands, August 26, 1951, Darlington, England. Jeff Wealands spent 24 years keeping goal for a number of clubs, including Darlington, Hull City, Birmingham City, and Altrincham.

Jeff Wealands signed professional forms for Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1968, but was unable to break through to the first team, and joined Fourth Division Darlington in 1970. In 1972, he moved on to to Second Division side Hull City where he established himself as first choice goalkeeper a year later. Wealands joined Second Division Birmingham City for a transfer fee of £30,000 in July 1979, and helped The Brummies win promotion back to the First Division the following year. He made more than 100 appearances for Birmingham before a difference of views with manager Ron Saunders saw him out of contention. He then teamed up with Manchester United as cover for Gary Bailey, initially on loan, in 1983, but a persistent injury restricted his chances. After loan spells at Oldham Athletic and Preston North End, he joined forces with Alliance Premier League Altrincham in 1985 and helped The Robins win the FA Trophy in the 1985–86 campaign. He later had a spell at Barrow before returning to Altrincham in 1988 where he ended his goalkeeping career in 1992, at he age of 41.
