Steven Robert James, born Coseley, England, November 29, 1949. Steve James started his career as an apprentice with Manchester United in July 1965 and signed his first professional contract with the club in December the following year. A dedicated and wholehearted defender, he would spend over ten years at Old Trafford before he went on to play for York City, Kidderminster Harriers, and Tipton Town.
Steve James was handed his First Division debut for Manchester United by Sir Matt Busby in a 2-0 defeat against North West rivals Liverpool at Anfield on the 12th of October 1968 and registered his first goal for The Reds in a 3-2 top-flight loss against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the 15th of March 1969. He made 21 Division One appearances for United during his inaugural season and proceeded to play 129 Football League games for the side during his Old Trafford career, contributing four goals in the process. The sturdy stopper won the Second Division Championship with Manchester United in 1975 before he was lured to Division Two York City by former Old Trafford manager Wilf McGuinness in the middle of the 1975-76 campaign and made his first team debut for the relegation struggling club in a 1-0 defeat to promotion candidates West Bromwich Albion at Bootham Crescent on the 17th of January 1976. After notching up 105 Football League appearances for The Minstermen, he joined forces with Non-League Kidderminster Harriers at the beginning of the 1980-81 season. And, at the end of the 1981-82 campaign, he left Aggborough Stadium for Tipton Town where he finished his active career.
