Steven William Paterson, born Elgin, Scotland, April 8, 1958. Steve Paterson looked to be on the threshold of stardom when he was brought to Second Division Champions Manchester United by Tommy Docherty from Highland Football League side Nairn County in the summer of 1975. But unfortunately things did not turn out as hoped and the injury prone player left Old Trafford just five years later.
Steve Paterson was given his Manchester United debut by Tommy Docherty when the talented defender took the field as a late second-half substitute for Three Lions winger Gordon Hill in a memorable 2-0 victory against three-times European Cup Winners Ajax of Amsterdam in front of a crowd of almost 60,000 at Old Trafford in the UEFA Cup First Round Second Leg on the 29th of September 1976. His second appearance for United came in a 3-0 UEFA Cup Second Round Second Leg defeat against Italian Serie A giants Juventus at Stadio Comunale in Turin on the 3rd of November the same year, and he would go on to make a total of five first-team outings for the club during the 1976-77 season.
However, while with Manchester United, Paterson only managed to accumulate ten first-class appearances for The Reds before the injury-hit stopper was transferred to Third Division Sheffield United for a fee of £60,000 at the start of the 1980-81 season. The Highlander would later provide sterling playing service to Buckie Thistle, Hong Kong Rangers, Nairn County, Sydney Olympic, and Yomiuri Tokyo before he went into football management when he took the head coaching reigns at Elgin City in 1988. He left the Borough Briggs club only two years later, though, due to a disagreement over wages and went on to manage several teams, including Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Aberdeen, Forres Mechanics, and Peterhead.
