Edwin van der Sar, born Voorhout, Netherlands, October 29, 1970. Edwin van der Sar started out his goalkeeping career with local team VV Foreholte before he went on to play for VV Noordwijk and AFC Ajax. After making 226 Dutch Eredivisie appearances for The Amstedammers, Van der Sar was sold to Serie A giants Juventus of Turin for an estimated transfer fee of £5 million at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season.
A goalkeeper without delusions, Edwin van der Sar proceeded to play 66 Serie A games for Juventus between 1999 and 2001. The Dutchman then left The Old Lady of Italy for Premier League side Fulham where he amassed 127 Premiership appearances during a five-year span at Craven Cottage. Impressed by the experienced goaltender, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson eventually bought him for a bargain fee of £2 million at the start of the 2001-02 campaign and he made his club debut in a Champions League Third Qualifying Round First Leg victory over Debreceni VSC at Old Trafford on the 9th of August 2005. Arguably, the pinnacle of his sporting life came on the 21st of May 2008 when his penalty save helped Manchester United win the Champions League Final against Roman Abramovich´s Chelsea at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. The Dutchman announced his retirement from the game of soccer at the end of the 2011-12 season after keeping goal for The Red Devils for six successful years, but he made a short return to football as he kept goal for VV Noordwijk in a 1-1 Saturday Hoofdklasse B draw with CVV de Jodan Boys in front of a crowd of 2,500 people at the Sportpark Duinwetering on the 12th of March 2016.
