Ralph Milne

Ralph Milne, born Dundee, Scotland, May 13, 1961. Dundonian Ralph Milne, who could play either as an attacking midfielder or a winger, kick-started his career at local side Dundee United before he proceeded to play for Charlton Athletic, Bristol City, Manchester United, West Ham United, and then finally Sing Tao SC. Internationally, he was capped three times by Scotland at U21 level between 1981 and 1983.

Ralph Milne was first discovered by Dundee United where he would play alongside talented footballers such as Eamonn Bannon, Davie Dodds, Paul Hegarty, David Narey, and Paul Sturrock. While at Tannadice Park, Milne accumulated 44 goals in 179 top-flight appearances for The Terrors and won the Scottish Football League Premier Division in 1983 and Scottish Football League Cup in 1979 and 1981 before he was transferred to Charlton Athletic at the end of the 1986-87 campaign. Following a comparatively short spell with The Addicks, he joined forces with Bristol City for whom he notched up six goals in 30 Football League games before Alex Ferguson lured him to Manchester United for a transfer fee of around £150,000 in November 1988. Unfortunately, he was not living up to expectations at United and he only managed to produce three goals in 23 First Division apperances during his time at Old Trafford. As things turned out, the increasingly frustrated forward was eventually forced out of the Manchester United first-team and was subsequently shipped out on loan to West Ham United before he ultimately was given a free transfer by the club at the end of the 1990-91 season. The Scotsman would then spend a season with Hong Kong outfit Sing Tao SC until he decided to retire from the game at end of the 1991-92 campaign at the relatively young age of age of 31. Having serious problems with alcoholism and gambling addiction, the struggling striker would most probably have had a far greater success in his professional footballing career were it not for his personal troubles.
