Danny Wallace

David Lloyd Wallace, born London, England, January 21, 1964. Hailing from Greenwich in South East London, Danny Wallace played for West Greenwich School and Deal Town as a youth. He embarked on his senior career at Southampton as an associate schoolboy in 1977 and later appeared for Manchester United, Millwall, Birmingham City, and Wycombe Wanderers before being forced into retirement in 1995.

Danny Wallace was an instant hit at Southampton and was given his First Division debut by Lawrie McMenemy in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on the 29th of November 1980. A small and compact left winger, his performances for The Saints grabbed the attention of Alex Ferguson who brought him to United for an estimated transfer fee of £1.2 million in September 1989. But despite winning the 1990 FA Cup, the 1990 FA Charity Shield, and the 1991 UEFA European Cup Winners’ Cup with The Reds, Wallace never quite managed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford. And when Lee Sharpe had his breakthrough at Manchester United, the increasingly restless player saw his first team opportunities at the club vanish into thin air and he was subsequently transferred to second tier side Birmingham City for a fee of £250,000 in October 1993 after having made 47 First Division appearances under Ferguson. Although his fitness problems had started at United, they got even worse at City and, after a brief spell at Wycombe Wanderers, the tiny flankman saw his professional career tragically cut short because of serious illness. At the end of the day, he had his well-deserved testimonial when a Southampton selection played an All Star team in front of an attendance of almost 15,000 spectators at St Mary’s Stadium on the 17th of May 2004. Although Wallace collected 14 England U21 caps, he only managed to make one international senior appearance for the country of his birth.
